Hilton Head Beach House

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA,  2007

This study for a house on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina is based on primary modular units, combining them in an open-space composition, in which the exterior penetrates the interior via a glass facade. It underlines the uniqueness of the location and the ocean vistas. The house stands on pylons (due to a crocodile population, among other reasons), allowing views under the house, overlooking the ocean and beautiful sand dunes featuring protected flora. All the rooms are situated on the first floor level and merge freely into expansive terraces. The main terrace is connected to the outdoor swimming pool. The guest building is at the back of the plot, employing an identical modular system. The plain composition of the house is based primarily on its striking horizontal segmentation (the horizontal lines of the dunes, beach and ocean level) and the vertical lines of the subtle pylons (and pine and palm trees).
